The Whole Camino Primitivo

The Whole Camino Primitivo map

The Camino Primitivo or the Original Way is thought to be the first of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago. Beginning in Oviedo, the Camino Primitivo requires a higher level of fitness due to the mountainous terrain that encompasses most of the trail through northern Spain.

Day 1 - Arrival to Oviedo

Day 2 - Oviedo to Grado (25km, 6h15)

Day 3 - Grado to Salas (22km, 5h30)

Day 4 - Salas to Tineo (19km, 5h)

Day 5 - Tineo to Pola Allende (29km, 9h)

Day 6 - Pola Allende to Berducedo (17km, 5h)

Day 7 - Berducedo to Grandas de Salime (23km, 5h45)

Day 8 - Grandas de Salime to A Fonsagrada (25km, 6h15)

Day 9 - A Fonsagrada to O Cadavo Baleira (24km, 7h)

Day 10 - O Cadavo Baleira to Lugo (31km, 8h)

The first section of the Original Way starts in Oviedo and heads west to finish in Lugo. The first leg of the trip is quite challenging, particularly since the walk climbs up numerous hills, including Alto del Fresnu, Puerto del Palo and Aerogenedores. Enjoy the beautiful views, local history and farmland every day of the trek.

Day 11 - Lugo to San Romao de Retorta (23km, 5h45)

Day 12 - San Romao de Retorta to Melide (23km, 6h)

Day 13 - Melide to Arzua (13km, 3h15)

Day 14 - Arzua to Rua (18km, 4h15)

Day 15 - Rua to Santiago de Compostela (21km, 5h30)

Day 16 - Santiago de Compostela. End of the Camino!

The last section of the Original Way begins in Lugo and finishes at the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela. While this section is easier than the first part, the walk is still very mountainous as it follows Ancient Roman roads. The final leg of the Original Way includes the medieval village of Ribadiso, a number of small rural villages, and various chapels. It also meets with the Camino Frances in Melide.
