The Camino del Norte is the northern most trek that begins in San Sebastian and ends in Oviedo. Known for being a hilly, coastal route, the Camino del Norte is perfect for those who are hoping to escape the heat of continental Spain.

Day 1 - Arrival in San Sebastian

Day 2 - San Sebastian to Getaria (26km, 7h30)

Day 3 - Getaria to Deba (17km, 6h30)

Day 4 - Deba to Markina (20km, 5h)

Day 5 - Markina to Gernika (25km, 7h15)

Day 6 - Gernika to Lezama (24km, 6h30)

Day 7 - Lezama to Bilbao (12km, 3h30)

Starting in San Sebastian, the first section of the Northern Way will travel along the beautiful coast of Spain. Halfway through the trek, after leaving Deba, the walk will leave the coastal footpaths and head onto more mountainous terrain. Enjoy stops in traditional villages, walks through the forest and all the luxury of northern Spain.



Day 8 - Bilbao to Portugalete (18km, 3h)

Day 9 - Portugalete to Castro Urdiales (28km, 7h30)

Day 10 - Castro Urdiales to Laredo (25km, 7h)

Day 11 - Laredo to Escalante (16km, 3h30)

Day 12 - Escalante to Santander (27km, 7h30)

The second section of the Northern Way begins in Bilbao and ends in Santander. Cutting in and out of the coastal paths, the second part of the Northern Way takes travellers to coastal towns, along a footpath next to the Galindo River and to various chapels and churches. Enjoy the scenery and the local wildlife along the path.



Day 13 - Santander to Arce (20km, 3h30)

Day 14 - Arce to Santillana del Mar (27km, 7h30)

Day 15 - Santillana del Mar to Comillas (23km, 6h45)

Day 16 - Comillas to Unquera (27km, 7h30)

Day 17 - Unquera to Llanes (25km, 7h)

Day 18 - Llanes to Ribadesella (29km, 8h)

Stretching from Santander to Ribadesella, the third section of the Northern Way follows the hilly coastal paths. Throughout this section, there are breath-taking ocean views, visits to various beaches and stops at plenty of local towns. Pay particular attention to the outstanding marine ecosystem and estuaries!



Day 19 - Ribadesella to Colunga (21km,5h)

Day 20 - Colunga to Villaviciosa (18km, 4h)

Day 21 - Villaviciosa to Pola de Siero (28km, 7h30)

Day 22 - Pola de Siero to Oviedo (17km, 3h45)

Day 23 - Oviedo. End of the Camino

The last section of the Northern Way begins in Ribadesella and finishes in Oviedo. Along this section of the Northern Way, enjoy the coastal views, the river Sebrayu, the Pre-Romanesque Church known as El Conventin and Oviedo which is regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage sites on the Camino.

Access

To San Sebastian (It is best to fly to Bilbao.)

A large amount of the passenger traffic at Bilbao Airport is from internal destinations and you can fly from Bilbao to any of the following Spanish airports: A Coruna, Alicante, Barcelona, Badajoz, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Jerez, Lanzarote, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Tenerife, Valencia and Vigo.

There are also European flights to Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Milan, Munich, Paris and Stuttgart.

At the moment EasyJet, Iberia and AerLingus fly from the UK and Ireland to Bilbao. EasyJet offer daily flights to Bilbao from London Stansted Airport, Iberia flies from Gatwick or Heathrow via Madrid and AerLingus operate out of Dublin.

Bus from Bilbao to San Sebastian

Back Home from Oviedo

There is a bus from Oviedo to Santander (2hrs45mins), 5 buses per day.

Alternatively, you can take the train (5hrs), 3 trains per day.

From Santander

Ryanair is the only low-cost airline that currently offers direct flights to Santander. They run flights from London Stansted and now Dublin, Frankfurt, Milan and Rome as well as Reus and Madrid in Spain.

Iberia offers a good selection of internal flights from Alicante, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Seville and Valencia.
