Camino Portugues - The Portuguese Way

The Camino Portugues, or the Portuguese Way, spans from Lisbon to Santiago and happens to be the route favoured by renowned lyricist and novelist Paulo Coelho. He clearly has good taste, as it's a remarkable journey, admired by many.

In 2017, this route's been busier than ever due to the 100 year anniversary of the apparitions at Fatima. With this in mind, we designed two options for day tours to Fatima - one from Lisbon, and one from Porto. Alternatively, pilgrims can walk through Tomar to add an extra night to their trip to take a day to visit Fatima.

The Camino Portugues was even used by Queen Isabel of Portugal in the 13th Century, who crossed some of the most beautiful parts of northern Portugal and south Galicia. Amid the clear blue waters of Sanxenxo, Cies Islands, and Baiona, you'll see the exact spot where Christopher Columbus arrived with the news of the discovery of America. It really is a route paved with history!

Boasting stunning coastlines and fantastic cities, such as Lisbon, Porto, and Pontevedra, the Camino Portugues has loads to offer. There are several important pilgrimage towns, such as Tui, as well as some of the most picturesque beaches in the world.

If you're looking to get away from the crowds and heat of the Summer, the Camino Portugues is perfect for you. This route gives you an opportunity to go for a swim on the gorgeous beaches and cool off after a day of walking. All the while, you can taste some of the best food and wine Portugal and Spain have to offer. The Camino Portugues is an authentic and culturally rich experience and not one to be missed!

Since 2006, Follow the Camino has developed new, innovative ways to walk the Camino Portugues. We've created five manageable sections from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela. The first, from Lisbon to Santarem, is over six days, whereas the other sections are over eight days. Each night, you'll stay in carefully selected and regularly evaluated, authentic accommodation (hotels, casa rurales, pensiones) and enjoy the best local alimentos y bebidas!

We also have a coastal route, The Camino Surf & Turf, from Viana do Castello to Santiago de Compostela that can be walked over 7 to 10 days.

Camino Tours Testimonials

"Delighted with the trip. Many very friendly families run hotels with a warm welcome. Luggage was seamlessly taken care of and the walking notes were very clear and good. Some of the breakfasts were a bit light and bland given we had a day walking ahead of us. Evening meals were very very good. Would recommend the seafood and Galacia dishes"
