Camino Frances or the French Way: the most celebrated Camino

The Camino Frances, or French Way, is one of the most popular routes among people walking on the Camino de Santiago. It's the chosen route for so many pilgrims because the path has loads of amazing attractions along the way to Santiago de Compostela. It's even mentioned in the Codex Calixtinus, a 12th Century manuscript, and is by far the best-known Camino route internationally. Back in Medieval times, thousands of pilgrims walked the Camino Frances in order to reach the Tomb of the Apostle St James the Greater.

In more recent times, the popular movie The Way, starring Martin Sheen and directed by his son Emilio Estevez, has renewed people's interest in the Camino Frances. Books such as Journey of the Spirit by Shirley MacLaine and Paulo Coehlo's The Pilgrimage have also nurtured a new enthusiasm for the Camino Frances, and indeed the entire Camino de Santiago.

The Camino Frances is a truly remarkable route weaving through mountains, monasteries and meadows. This path takes in some of the most scenic parts of Spain, including Pamplona, Leon and Burgos. It also passes through many towns with ancient ties to the Camino, like Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Logrono and Sarria.

Since 2006, Follow the Camino has been offering and organising innovative ways to walk the Camino Frances. We've produced eight manageable sections, each taking between six and seven days. At night, you'll stay in carefully selected, authentic accommodation, such as family-owned hotels, genuine casa rurales, and great pensiones. After a satisfying day of walking the Camino, you can put your feet up and enjoy the social and cultural scene, meeting other pilgrims and sharing stories over local comidas y bebidas!

Camino Tours Testimonials

"Having just come back from 5 days on the Camino - the French Way, all I can say is what an amazing experience and challenge it was, one must go and try some part of it. It's an unforgettable experience, where you see amazing places and meet really nice and interesting people. I'll definitely go back and do some more of it."
