Bilbao is the fourth largest city in Spain. The city is an excellent place to spend some time should you choose to do the Camino del Norte (Northern Way) of the Camino de Santiago. It is home to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which is an architectural wonder. Canadian architect Frank Gehry designed the Guggenheim, which opened in 1997 and has been hailed by fellow architects as “the greatest building of our time”.

What’s in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao ?

The Guggenheim is full of stunning modern art from the mid-twentieth century to present day. Some of the more well-known artists from the second half of the 20th-century include Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, and Willem de Kooning, making the Guggenheim’s art collection very modern and pleasing to the eye. They have also purchased many major modern and contemporary pieces such as Robert Rauschenberg's Barge, Mark Rothko’s Untitled, Jeff Koons’ Puppy and Joesph Beuys's Lightning with Stag in Its Glare.

What do people say about the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao ?

According to reviews by Lonely Planet, the most exciting time to visit the Guggenheim Museum is during one of their temporary exhibitions. These are almost constantly on show, so timing should not be an issue for visitors. To find out which exhibitions are on and when just check the Guggenheim website. Admission is reasonable and includes an audio guide, but note that prices vary depending on the art programme. The audio guides are an excellent way to enjoy the various exhibits and learn more about the museum at your own pace. Many pilgrims walking the Camino along the Northern Way choose to spend at least a day or two in Bilbao to experience the city and to visit the world-renowned Guggenheim.
