Practicalities

How many people will be on the walking holiday?

  • If you choose a Self-Guided walking holiday there will be as many as are in your party. We do not put you with other people unless you specifically request to join another group. If you choose a Guided holiday there will be a maximum of 15 walkers in your group.

  • If you and your partner desire an intimate walking holiday, then we have what you’re looking for. Escape in the knowledge that your privacy won't be disturbed.

  • If you book as a family and would prefer so not to join a group, we can ensure that it's just you, your family and nobody else. What a change from the package holiday you went on last year!!!

  • Registering with a group of friends? We'll make sure you end up in the same group.

  • Of course, you can meet with other walkers along the way, but the difference is, the choice is yours. And that changes everything.

Can I register for a walking holiday as a single guest?

Yes. Usually, on a Self-Guided walking holiday, there’s a supplement due, for example, to the extra cost of a single room. But our policy is simple and is reflected in Our Ethic; One Foot Abroad is committed to fair and transparent prices. Just send us an email and we’ll provide you with precise information regarding pricing.

When is the best time of the year to go on a walking holiday?

Our walking holidays run year round. However, spring and autumn are the most popular time for walkers along the Camino. Some of the routes can get hot and crowded during summer, while a winter holiday, although feasible, will mean lower temperatures.

Top

Are there any hidden items not included in the price?

We will provide you with an information pack that lists all of the items included AND all of the items NOT included in your holiday. That means no unpleasant surprises when booking with Follow The Camino.

What happens in the case of an emergency?

Injured high in the mountains? Lost in bad weather? A hotel refusing to accommodate you? For such incidents, the walking notes on a Self-Guided walking holiday, or the certified guide on a Guided walking holiday, will help you.

But, One Foot Abroad likes to foresee such issues before they arise. Our Walking Grades will help you to choose the right level of difficulty for you, limiting the possibility of injury. Our knowledge of the area makes a massive difference when it comes to choosing our business partners on the ground. Also, as additional security and for your own peace of mind, it is our policy to ask for mandatory personal insurance when going on holidays with us.

The most important thing is your safety and we are committed to that. We give you an emergency phone number that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And we stand by it.

Top

Can I extend my holiday?

Yes; our holidays are very flexible. We can extend your holiday either by combining two One Foot Abroad holidays, or by customising your One Foot Abroad holiday.

In addition, you can go on your own holiday either before or after your One Foot Abroad holiday. We don’t include flights in our packages for this very reason. You can choose your own dates, and also minimise the price of your flights by taking the airline of your choice.

With no paucity of low-cost airline companies, we feel this option is definitely the best for our customers.

Top

Can I customise my walking holiday?

Our walking holidays can be customised. You can extend your holiday (see “Can I extend my holiday?”) either before or after your walking holiday with us.

You can also ask for alterations during your walking holiday. Such alterations include, but are not limited to; accommodation, special interests, rest days, etc. If in doubt, contact us here

In addition, we can personalise your holiday experience even more by offering plenty of options on the vast majority of our walking holidays. Although, this obviously depends on the availability of local services.

Top

Can we arrange our own flights?

Yes. Follow The Camino lets you arrange your own flights, so you can take advantage of low-cost airlines (Ryanair, easyJet, etc). Also, you can extend your holiday (see "Can I extend my holiday?") and therefore benefit from the most flexible travel dates.

Top

Where do you pick me up?

Your pick-up point is clearly stated in the holiday pack you receive before departure.

One Foot Abroad can also organise an optional transfer to/from the nearest airport.

Special Interests
Are there any cultural interests on the route?

We always attempt to include other specific interests in our walking holidays. After considering the natural aspects of the route, all the other interests are looked at. In the walking notes, you will find information on the flora and fauna and all local cultural interests.

I’m a charity / corporate organisation, what can you offer me?

Adventure is the best way to strengthen a team. In this sense, all our walking holidays are appropriate for corporate outings.

Do you tailor holidays?

Yes. Tailoring a holiday can mean extending a holiday or customising a holiday. Creating a holiday from scratch, while it demands more effort, is also possible. We tailor holidays from scratch for groups of six or more. Talk to us about your idea by phone or contact us here and we’ll come back to you with suggestions and a quotation.

Other

What kind of fitness level is required?

We offer a range of walking holidays encompassing 3 walking grades; Easy, Moderate and Challenging. Each grade is described in detail in our "Walking Grades” chapter.

As a general rule, each walker will find their own challenge. This is the great thing about walking – everyone has his own 'Everest'! So, whether you are 8 or 80, whether you have exercised regularly or trained well, you’ll discover what is best for you.

Top

What kind of walking notes do you provide?

Three weeks before your departure date, we’ll send you a Holiday Pack. This pack contains all the information about your holiday, including the walking notes and maps.

These walking notes are extremely detailed and describe your route step-by-step. Our notes are checked regularly and updated accordingly. In addition, we welcome customer feedback on the information we distribute. To see what the walking notes look like, see an example on “Walking Notes”.

Our maps are the best in terms of design and usability. With scales of either 1:25000 or 1:50000, they are perfect for walkers and adventure travellers.

Top

Will I get lost?

For Self-Guided walking holidays, we provide you with a detailed holiday pack containing walking notes and a map. Therefore it is virtually impossible to get lost! Our routes follow mostly marked paths. If you find that the choice of path is not obvious for any reason, we urge you to let us know so that we can amend our walking notes accordingly.

Top

What should I bring with me?

Depending on the time of year and your chosen destination, clothing requirements can vary greatly. The information pack will list any specific clothing items that are recommended for your chosen walk. As a rule of thumb, it’s better to take more than you think you'll need, and remember – we transfer your luggage for you which means you’ll only have to carry a light bag during the day.

For all walking holidays, we recommend you always pack sun cream, sunglasses, appropriate walking footwear and rain gear.

Top

How is the route selection made?

The route selection is made by our One Foot Abroad specialists. Their experience and intimate knowledge of the Camino is invaluable. The route is selected by walkers for walkers, taking you through the most beautiful and characteristic landscapes of a particular region.

We also ensure a high level of comfort and tradition at accommodations along the way, and we always point out special cultural interests on your route (see “Are there any cultural interests on the route?”).

Top

How heavy will my day pack be?

Ideally, your daypack should be very light, consisting only of water, a packed lunch, sun glasses, sun cream, rain gear and a warm jumper (plus any extra items that you may wish to bring along). When you arrive at your hotel, your luggage will be waiting for you.

In summary, we believe that the comfort you gain by walking with a light pack (about 4kg) enables you to take more pleasure from the day.

Top

What is the accommodation like?

This is a very important question, and One Foot Abroad has selected the walking routes in order to offer you the best accommodation available locally for each walking holiday. We select accommodation based on comfort, facilities and character. For example, we always give preference to hotels awarded with a quality label and/or those recommended by recognised guidebooks. In addition, we try each hotel ourselves, to ensure the quality of the service we provide. Take a look at our “Virtual Holiday” where you can see pictures of our hotels.

Where possible, our hotels are also chosen on the quality of their menus. We place emphasis on regional products and traditional dishes for a real 'taste of the area' (see “What about meals?”).

Top

What about meals?

The food served by the hotel is definitely an important criterion in our hotel selection. Meals are typically made from fresh, local products and served in a traditional manner. Prepare for an authentic taste of the Camino regions with dishes like bouillabaisse (fish soup), merluza a la Gallega (Galician hake stew), torta di Santiago (almond cake) and empanadas (stuffed savoury pastries).

For lunch, you’ll either have the opportunity to choose your own rest stop, or else we’ll provide you with a substantial picnic lunch.
