Via de la Plata - Section 9 - 7 Days/6 Nights - 89 km - From €490 -
From A Gudiña to Ourense

This Walking Holiday explores the 9th section of Via de la Plata, the longest of all Camino routes to Santiago de Compostela! It runs through the whole country from South to North, from the hot Andalousian plains to the green mountains of Galicia, from Arabian influenced buildings to traditional stone farmhouses and much more! This Camino in its whole offers most of Spain’s rich and mixed culture.

Green and undulating landscapes, there is no doubt: you are in Galicia! The Camino, or Way of Saint James, crosses the South West edge of the Cordillera Cantabrica, through isolated villages and roaming cattle. Definitely, it offers some of the most stunning views of the whole Via de la Plata route! As there are steady bits, it is quite challenging, but we have organised our walking days so there are all less than 22 kilometres long.

DAY BY DAY

Day 1 – A Gudiña
A Gudina is a small town located in the province of Ourense, Galicia. It seems the town has got two distinct identities with its main street bordered by modern buildings where one can avail all services one may need. On the other hand, a few metres away, the parallel back street seems more like an isolated rural village with its XVIIth century baroque church.

Day 2 – A Gudiña to Campobecerros (5h, 20km, +200m -250m)

When leaving A Gudiña, we follow the wonderful scenic route that leads us to Campobecerros. We will also pass through remote Galician hamlets, often offering manificient vies over the mountains, such as Venda Teresa or Venda Capela. This is not such an easy stage, but the views you get during the day are the most enjoyable rewards. One of the highlight of the day is probably when the Camino overlooks the Las Portas dam, and soon after it, a steep descent brings you down to Campobecerros. From here, short transfer to your hotel in Couso.

Day 3 - Campobecerros to Laza (4h, 14km, +100m -750m)

Transfer back from hotel to Campobecerros. As you go up and down through the Galician mountains, once again, the Via de la Plata route will surprise you with great views, still passing through pretty hamlets with the likes of Portocomba or the gorgeous As Eiras. Then, a shady paved road leads you down to Laza, offering spectacular views over the valley and the surrounding mountains. Transfer from Laza to your hotel in Couso.

Day 4 – Laza to Vilar de Barrio (5h45, 19km, +750m -450m)
Short transfer from hotel back to Laza. The first few kilometres after Laza run through the valley, passing through Soutelo Verde and its old church. Then, it is a long climb up through low pines and heather, until you reach Albergueria and its incredible stone balconies. Then, you will start a gentle walk down on the other side the mountain (much flatter, greener and populated) before reaching Vila de Barrio, a village located on a large plain, nested at the foot of the mountains. From here, you will be transferred to your hotel in Couso.

Day 5 – Vilar de Barrio to Xunqueira de Ambia (3h30, 14km, 100m)

Short transfer from hotel back to Vila de Barrio. Today, we leave the mountains behind us for a while and spend the day walking through the plain, farmlands and more modern villages than those seen up in the mountains. From Bobadela, it alternates between oakwoods, eucalyptus trees and open landscapes to arrive in Xunqueira de Ambia with its XIIth century monastery.

Day 6 – Xunqueira de Ambia to Ourense (5h15, 22km, -470m)

When leaving Xunqueira de Ambia, we also leave the quietness of the isolated mountains. Indeed, as we walk towards Ourense, we come across many hamlets that merge one into another and as the Camino mostly follow the main national road, we also walk through a few industrial areas before reaching the final destination of this section: Ourense.

HOTEL AND GUESTHOUSE GRADES - HOW WE CHOOSE YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Our accommodation is selected based on a number of criteria, including location, comfort, services, price and character. We always try to book accommodation that is both on/near the Camino and also close to the historical quarter or centre of the town/city. This is facilitated by the fact that the Camino usually goes through the heart of each town and/or city.

In larger towns, which are usually at the beginning and end of each section, we book hotels of a 3* standard. In smaller towns/villages/hamlets in between the larger towns, we choose hotels or guesthouses of a 2* standard. However, there could be some exceptions to this rule, for example, in some small villages, our selection depends on local infrastructure and it may happen that the only possibility is a non-rated guesthouse. This does not mean it is not up to our standards only that it does not have an official classification, which is usually due to the rural and remote nature of parts of the Camino.

Given the reasons stated above, we do believe that a 2* hotel located in the historical centre is a better choice than a 3* hotel located in the outskirts of the town at a distance from the Camino. If our first choice is not available, we will use another accommodation of the same standard and price. If there is no such accommodation available, we may contact you to offer either an upgrade at a premium, or a downgrade with a refund, again based on local infrastructure in each area.

We are determined in our motto: to provide our customers with the best available on the Camino.
