Our Short Break trip gives you the opportunity to experience the Way of St James / Camino de Santiago, even on a limited amount of time. It is also a good opportunity to combine both healthy holidays and relaxing time as both Laredo and Santander are well known Spanish holiday resort spots with beautiful beaches. With this walking holiday, you will have a chance to experience the true feeling of being a pilgrim of modern times while enjoying the surrounding seaside.

On this section, we walk on the Northern Way / Camino del Norte to the famous resort of Santander, on the Atlantic coast. The journey starts in Laredo with its 5 kilometres long sandy beach, and continues all along the Northern Way, through both the charming countryside and nearby the Northern coast of Spain. It then reaches Santander where you can extend your stay.

Everyday, during the walk, you are guaranteed a high level of comfort and gastronomy. The Camino is clearly marked with the “Scallop Shell” showing you the way.

DAY 1 - Laredo         With a 5 km long sand beach and a historical centre, Laredo is the perfect start for this short break walking holiday in Northern Spain. With anchovies being the local speciality of the town, Laredo is also a good spot to taste the seafood and fish of the Northern coast. Town: ATM, Shops, all facilities DAY 2 – Laredo to Escalante (14.5km, 3h30, +100m -100m)         This easy short stage combines both a bit of seaside with the charming harbour of Colindres, and a bit of countryside, with the Camino passing through a couple of tiny old villages with stone houses and old churches along the way. Escalante is one of these charming towns, with some typical Cantabrian traditionnal houses. Town: ATM, Shops, all facilities. Meals: Breakfast, dinner"

DAY 3 – Escalante to Santander (27km, 7h30, +180m -200m)         Today, the Camino starts running through some rural areas before following a cycling track towards Somo. There, after traveling by land all day long, the rewarding bit comes up: traveling by sea! Indeed, at Somo's pier, you get on a ferry, a 25 minutes journey on the sea, which ends up in the heart of Santander, a lively city with a few nice beaches as the famous Playa del Sardinero. HOTEL AND GUESTHOUSE GRADES – HOW WE CHOOSE YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Our accommodation is selected based on a number of criteria, including location, comfort, services, price and character. We always try to book accommodation that  is both on/near the Camino and also close to the historical quarter or centre of the town/city. This is facilitated by the fact that the Camino usually goes through the heart of each town and/or city.

In larger towns, which are usually at the beginning and end of each section, we book hotels of a 3* standard. In smaller towns/villages/hamlets in between the larger towns, we choose hotels or guesthouses of a 2* standard. However, there could be some exceptions to this rule, for example, in some small villages, our selection depends on local infrastructure and it may happen that the only possibility is a non-rated guesthouse. This does not mean it is not up to our standards only that it does not have an official classification, which is usually due to the rural and remote nature of parts of the Camino.

Given the reasons stated above, we do believe that a 2* hotel located in the historical centre is a better choice than a 3* hotel located in the outskirts of the town at a distance from the Camino. If our first choice is not available, we will use another accommodation of the same standard and price. If there is no such accommodation available, we may contact you to offer either an upgrade at a premium, or a downgrade with a refund, again based on local infrastructure in each area.
