3rd section of the Camino Norte. Starting from Santander & finishing in the pleasant seaside resort of Ribadesella. Charming coastal landscape, following the mountains of the north, provides a spectacular contrast with the picturesque coastline.
At each stage, you are guaranteed a great level
of comfort and gastronomy. The walk
requires a good physical condition. However, it’s a highly
rewarding walk including numerous great cultural highlights. |

Day 1 - Santander
You will be booked in a hotel in the heart of the
town of Santander. The rooms are en-suite.

DAY 2 – From Santander to Arce (16km 3h30 +-120m)
During this stage, the Camino moves slightly inland and comes upon towns such as Santa Cruz de Bezana, Mompia and Boo de Pielagos, the estuary of which (there is currently a project for a pedestrian bridge which follows the old path and shortens the journey by approximately 10 kilometres) leads to the village of Arce.

DAY 3 – From Arce to Santillana del Mar (27km 7h30 +470m -50m)
The Camino passes the nice and hilly landscape of the coast. Coming to Miengo we are finally reaching the Besaya region. Then, coming to Suance, take your time to visit this charming little village. Passing meadows and sleepy villages, we arrive in the medieval village Santillana del Mar.

DAY 4 – From Santillana del Mar to Comillas (23km 6h45 +120m -540m)
This stage introduces the pilgrim to the wild western coast of Cantabria. The Camino passes villages of outstanding beauty like Cobreces, with its Cistercian Monastery and finally arrives in Comillas with its impressive beaches, and remarkable architecture, such as the spectacular “Capricho de Gaudi”, the Palace of Sobrellano and its chapel pantheon, and the Pontifical University.

DAY 5 – From Comillas to Unquera (27km 7h30 +-210m)
From Comillas, the Camino continues along the coast, and comes to Oyambre Natural Park. Here you will have the chance to witness an outstanding example of marine ecosystem made of large variety of birds, mollusks, and fishes. The Camino reaches the town of San Vicente de la Barquera. Finally passing estuaries with green pastures and forests we arrive in Unquera.

DAY 6 – From Unquera to Llanes (23km 7h +-150m)
The Camino de Santiago enters Asturias crossing a bridge over the River Deva and comes to Bustio. Before Colombres, we have to climb the "Cuesta'l Cantu". Then we go downhill along the Sierra de La Borbolla. The Way enters Pendueles. There, the Camino take a narrow footpath that crosses the road to Andrin and climb up to the Jorcada pass. The route drops to La Portilla and continues to Llanes.

DAY 7 – From Llanes to Ribadesella (29km 8h +-100m)
Passing the beautiful beaches of Palombina and Barro, the Camino crosses the River Niembro following a dirt track along the coast. Climbing steadily uphill, we reach the Church of San Pedro de Pria, set on a hill overlooking the district’s seven towns. Then, the Camino continues downhill to the medieval stone bridge over the River Guadamia, cross the railway and continue to Sobares, and Ribadesella. Ribadesella is a fascinating town well worth a visit.

Flight information
Best to fly to Santander and back from Santander
- Santander Airport
Ryanair are the only low cost airline that currently offer direct flights to Santander. They offer flights from London Stansted and now Dublin, Frankfurt, Milan and Rome as well as Reus and Madrid in Spain.
Iberia offer a good selection of internal flights from Alicante, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Seville and Valencia.
- Bilbao Airport
A large amount of the passenger traffic at Bilbao Airport is from internal flights and you can fly from Bilbao to any of the following Spanish Airports: A Coruna, Alicante, Barcelona, Badajoz, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Jerez, Lanzarote, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Tenerife (North and South), Valencia and Vigo.
There are also European flights to Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Milan, Munich, Paris and Stuttgart.
At the moment Easyjet Iberia and AerLingus fly from the UK and Ireland to Bilbao. Easyjet offer daily flights to Bilbao from London Stansted Airport, Iberia flys from Gatwick or Heathrow via Madrid and AerLingus flies out of Dublin.
